History of Munnar

History of Munnar

Modern day Munnar was carved out, after a sequence of historic events. The earliest residents of modern day Munnar are the Muthuvan tribal community. Until the latter part of the 19th century, the areas were left untouched and unexplored (when a flurry of plantations came up in the area). John Daniel Munro introduced the world to Munnar in the 1870s, who came across the place by accident. He was called in to solve a border dispute between Travancore and its neighbour Madras, as the British Resident of Travancore kingdom. He fell in love with this new found area immediately.

Munnar was the jenmam (birth) land of the Poonjar Royal Family, though the Munnar region fell under the jurisdiction of the Travancore kingdom. The royal family enjoyed absolute powers over the land as the landlord since it was their ‘jenmam land’. Munro started transforming the area by convincing the royal family to lease the land to him and. The North Travancore Land Planting & Agricultural Society was formed by Munro in 1879. In various parts of the region they started the cultivation of crops, including coffee, cardamom, cinchona and sisal.

Everything else in the region was soon replaced by tea with A.H. Sharp, the first to do so. Tea was planted by Sharp in around 50 acres of land at Parvathy. It’s now part of the Seven Mallay estate. In 1895, Finlay Muir & Company (James Finlay and Company Limited) entered the scene. They bought 33 independent estates. To manage these estates, the Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company was formed in 1897.

Disaster struck the area in 1924. The monsoon was particularly bad that year. The terrain was destroyed by heavy landslides and flooding. A lot of effort went into restoring the estates. Many lives and property were lost. It took the inhabitants a while to start re-planting the area. The Tata Group entered the area in 1964. The collaboration of Tata Group with Finlay resulted in the formation of the Tata-Finlay Group. In 1983 Tata Tea Ltd. was formed. The Kannan Devan Hills Produce Company Pvt. Ltd. was formed in 2005 and the ownership of its plantations was transferred to the new company by Tata Tea.

The tourism industry redefined Munnar in the latter part of the 20th century. Munnar natural beauty and rare flora and fauna started attracting people in large numbers. Today Munnar is one of the most popular tourist spot in India. A number of hotels and resorts came up and soon, word about Munnar spread across the world.

MEESAPULIMALA

Meesapulimala

The beauty of Meesapulimala has to be enjoyed only through trekking. 15 kilometres from Munnar town and 8 kilometre long trek from the Rhodovalley, offers breathtaking views of the grasslands, rainforests and wildlife at the high altitude. Rhodovalley is named thus due to the red rhododendron trees, which bloom here. Though the trek is long, it is average.

The treks start from the campsite at the base of the first hill. From here it continues on to the mesmerizing forests of the Shola grassland. The trail begins to get a little steep, just about 10 minutes from start. In no time you would be at the peak of the first of the eight hills. From the cloud-kissed mountain tops, you would get a picturesque view of Munnar and Surianelli towns.

Descending the hill would require you to cross the beautiful Anayairankal Lake. If lucky, the wildlife of the Shola forests may come out and give you a welcoming sight, by the time you reach the seventh peak. Even though tired, we feel refreshed and excited to see the breathtaking views, on reaching the eighth and the final peak, the Meesapulimala peak.

Meesapulimala tourist spot

A point to be noted is that the beautiful purple Kurinji flower (Neelakurinji), blooms once in every 12 years. And so plan the trip coinciding with this.  We get a magical view of Neelakurinji blooming from the peaks of Meesapulimala. Kurinji flowers represent the rich biodiversity that the Western Ghats is famous for. Travel between the months of August and October and watch the mountain slopes decorated with plenty of Neelakurinji flowers.
